(Chicago, IL) — July 12, 2023. Boaters from all over Chicago set sail this weekend, July 14–16, for the 10th Annual Black Boat Scene. Over a thousand water enthusiasts from Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, and Washington D.C. converged on Chicago's lakefront for a maritime experience unlike any other.

For Luxury Lakefront Charters, one of the signature organizations operating five vessels at the event, the Black Boat Scene has become the quintessential boat party of the summer season. The energy on the water is electric — a celebration of community, culture, and the sheer joy of being out on Lake Michigan with people who share your love of the water.

"We are really excited to be a part of the festivities taking place this weekend. There will be a lot of networking, tons of mingling, and plenty of cruising on Lake Michigan on Sunday."
— Dorian Rushing, Luxury Lakefront Charters

A Captain's Perspective: From Deckhand to the Helm

Among the captains steering Luxury Lakefront Charters vessels through the weekend's festivities was Trevonte Battle, a Chicago native whose journey to the captain's chair is as inspiring as the event itself.

Captain Trevonte Battle

Trevonte grew up in Humboldt Park on Chicago's West Side — far from the lakefront's gleaming marinas. He never imagined he'd one day be navigating the waters of Lake Michigan as a licensed captain. His story began simply enough: a part-time job search in 2007 led him to Shoreline Boats, where he started as a deckhand.

"When I applied for the job back then, I was only looking for a part-time job. But as time went by and I started learning more and more about the vessels, I decided that I wanted to become a captain and get my license."
— Captain Trevonte Battle

That decision set him on a path that would require dedication, time on the water, and a rigorous licensing process. After logging 365 hours on the water, Trevonte earned his United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner 100 Masters License — a credential that qualifies him to captain vessels carrying passengers for hire on inland and near-coastal waters.

"To be honest, it's just nice seeing our culture coming together, yachting peacefully and enjoying one another."
— Captain Trevonte Battle, on the Black Boat Scene

Giving Back: Mentoring the Next Generation

Captain Trevonte's commitment to the water doesn't end when the charter season closes. When he's not sailing, he works with young people interested in learning about boats and water safety — passing on the same knowledge and passion that transformed his own life. It's a mission that resonates deeply with Luxury Lakefront Charters' broader commitment to the Chicago community.

As a minority-owned business with roots in Chicago's South Side, Luxury Lakefront Charters has always seen the Black Boat Scene as more than just a business opportunity. It's a celebration of what's possible when a community embraces the water — and a reminder that Lake Michigan belongs to everyone.

About the Black Boat Scene

The Black Boat Scene (also known as the Black Yacht Weekend or Chicago Scene) is an annual multi-day gathering that draws Black boating enthusiasts from across the country to Chicago's lakefront. Now in its second decade, the event has grown from a local gathering into a nationally recognized celebration of Black excellence on the water.

Participants come from major cities across the country, filling the marina with music, laughter, and the unmistakable energy of a community that has claimed its place on the water. For many attendees, it's the highlight of the Chicago summer — and for Luxury Lakefront Charters, it's one of the most anticipated weekends of the year.
